Mobile Health Innovation in Child Care: Evaluating the Primaku Android Application for Enhancing Mothers' Knowledge of Child Growth

Dewi Setyoningsih, Nendy Akbar Rozaq Rais

Abstract

Inadequate maternal knowledge regarding early child growth and development can hinder the detection of developmental delays and red flags during toddlerhood. This study evaluates the effectiveness of an Android-based mobile health (mHealth) application, "PrimaKu," in enhancing mothers' knowledge of toddler growth and development compared to conventional printed leaflets. A quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest control group design was conducted involving 108 mothers of toddlers in the operational area of Colomadu I Primary Health Center. Respondents were randomly allocated into an experimental group (n = 54), receiving educational intervention via the PrimaKu Android application, and a control group (n = 54), receiving printed leaflets. Data were collected using validated demographic and knowledge questionnaires (V = 0.91, Cronbach's α = 0.859) and analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank and Independent Samples t-test. Baseline knowledge scores showed no significant difference between the groups (p = 0.202). Post-intervention results demonstrated significant knowledge improvements in both the experimental group (pre-test: 43.59 ± 8.51 to post-test: 65.87 ± 6.62, p = 0.000) and control group (pre-test: 45.53 ± 8.92 to post-test: 58.70 ± 7.38, p = 0.000). However, the experimental group achieved a significantly higher mean knowledge increase (22.28 ± 9.01) compared to the control group (13.28 ± 8.70, p = 0.000). Integrating mHealth technology via Android applications provides an interactive, accessible, and significantly more effective medium than printed leaflets for maternal health education, offering strong potential to support early childhood developmental monitoring.
